Guidebook Debate Update

Public Submissions and debate on Calgary's "Guidebook for Great Communities" has just got underway for the second day at City Hall.

For anyone who hasn't been following the Guidebook issue before this week - and we don't blame you! - the Guidebook is the City's latest attempt to master-plan the City from the top down.

To be clear, there are actually some positive changes in the 130+ page Guidebook, where the City will allow for more competition, choice, and markets in certain areas.

But overall, the Guidebook is more about just implementing a different type of ideological central-planning, rather than any kind of move away from central-planning.

Decision-Based Evidence-Making And The Guidebook

If you've been following our work at Common Sense Calgary for a while, you'll know that one of our biggest pet-peeves about Calgary Council is the City's "consultation" processes.

Calgary's "Guidebook for Great Communities" is a perfect example of this consultation farce.

Even putting aside the challenges that the pandemic has introduced to the consultation process, the City simply isn't interested in what Calgarians actually think.
