What an incredible response to our petition to Bring Back Fireworks On Canada Day!
Despite launching less than 48 hours ago, on a holiday weekend, more than 5,000 Calgarians have already added their signature.
Calgarians really are sick of this kind of nonsense at City Hall!
In fact, we’ve had so much support that we’re starting to attract media attention, and even some Councillors are starting to feel the heat.
Yesterday, Councillor Penner responded to our petition on Twitter, claiming that the decision to cancel the fireworks was made by unelected City staff, rather than by Council.
Councillor Penner also claimed that Council "reversing this decision would be upholding colonialism and racism."
Essentially, Councillor Penner is passing the buck and calling you a racist while she’s at it.
Absolutely abhorrent behaviour from someone who is supposed to be an elected representative.
It also makes you wonder if this is perhaps the explanation for why the reasons the City provided last week for the cancellation were so weak and generic.
We did wonder why they seemed to be throwing pretty much every nonsensical social justice catchphrase out all at once.
Is it actually just that the higher-ups at City Hall all think that we’re just a bunch of racists for wanting to celebrate Canada Day with our families, but they knew they couldn’t get away with saying that out loud?
And then Councillor Penner goes and admits it in public on Twitter?
Oops.
Maybe the more important question is whether any of her Council colleagues agree with her that the vast majority of Calgarians are racist for liking fireworks?
We’d sure like to know the answer to that one.
If other Councillors don't agree with Councillor Penner, and the fireworks cancellation really was just a decision made by City staff, then there’s a really simple fix…
The Mayor and Council can get together, hold an urgent Council meeting, and reverse the decision immediately.
If they don’t, and they’re happy for the City’s staff to go ahead with this cancellation, then I guess we have our answer?
Either way, you can be sure that here at Common Sense Calgary, we will continue to represent common sense Calgarians who just want to enjoy time with their families on Canada Day.
I can’t quite believe I have to say this, but, it’s not racist to want to celebrate Canada Day with fireworks - or to celebrate Canada Day at all.
If you agree, and you haven’t had a chance to sign the petition yet, please show Council just how unpopular this insane idea is by doing so now.
Bring Back Fireworks On Canada Day
With a provincial election going on, we’ve been keeping an extra close eye on City Hall to make sure they don’t sneak anything through while everyone is distracted.
And, well, you’re never gonna guess what they thought they could get away with announcing on Thursday, while everyone was busy watching the provincial election debate.
In Calgary, on Canada Day, the traditional fireworks show will be replaced with a stunning display of virtue signalling!
That’s right, the City of Calgary has officially cancelled the City’s annual Canada Day fireworks!
Why?
Well, the overpaid activists we call bureaucrats at City Hall can’t even decide which trendy cause to attribute their social engineering to this time, so they picked them all!
The change is apparently being introduced to address any and all of the following, depending on who you ask:
- Cultural sensitivities
- Truth and Reconciliation
- Traffic delays
- The 100th anniversary of the Chinese Immigration Act
- Parking restrictions
- Migratory birds
- Community impacts
The only thing the City seems to have failed to consider when making this decision?
What Calgarians want.
Can you imagine the conversation that took place around this decision? We can!
“Let’s just throw every woke concept at the wall and see which one sticks!”
“Great idea!”
As usual, government bureaucracy takes a minor issue, spends your money trying to fix something no one wants fixed, and then creates an even larger problem.
The change is supposedly a "pilot project", with the City saying that over the next year, they’ll engage with citizens, community groups, and cultural groups to get feedback and understand what Calgarians want.
But we have a better idea!
How about we put an end to this nonsense immediately, and force City Hall to reverse course and bring back fireworks now, this year?
It’s time to tell City Hall you want Canada Day fireworks this year!
If you agree, sign our petition calling on Calgary Council to Bring Back Fireworks On Canada Day.
Then share the petition with your friends, family, co-workers, and every Calgarian, so they can make their voices heard too.
