Campaign Roundup - Day 27:

  • We are in the last days of the election campaign! Election Day is on Monday, October 20th. Polls will be open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. You can find locations - as well as voter information - on the City’s website.

  • Calgary’s next City Council will face tough decisions on how to fund a growing city without overburdening taxpayers. The outgoing Council proposed a 3.6% property tax increase for 2026, sparking debate among candidates over whether to freeze taxes, shift burdens, or focus on fiscal restraint.

  • Four lesser-known candidates are also vying for Calgary’s mayoral seat: Sarah Elder, Grant Prior, Jaeger Gustafson, and Larry R. Heather. Elder, a business owner and former BC government staffer, is focusing her campaign on child and family safety, local culture, and opposing blanket rezoning. Prior, an oil and gas worker, says he’s running to represent working-class Calgarians, advocating for higher taxes on large corporations and more funding for addiction recovery. Gustafson wants lower taxes and greater citizen consultation, proposing hundreds of new police, fire, and infrastructure officers. Heather, a perennial candidate, is campaigning on inserting Christian values into City Hall.

  • Don’t forget to check out our 2025 Municipal Election Coverage, which reveals where Mayoral and Council candidates stand on key issues like safety, affordability, taxation, and accountability. We have published their unedited responses so voters can make informed choices. There are videos too!
