It's Budget Season

Calgary City Council is preparing for another budget season - and another tax increase.

The 2026 budget proposes $4.6 billion in operating spending and $3.6 billion in capital investments, including funding for affordable housing, downtown safety initiatives, Calgary Police Service programs, and transit improvements such as increased service frequency, fare affordability programs, and maintenance and safety upgrades.

The budget also contains a "blended" 3.6% property tax increase, meaning the average homeowner could see a 5.4% increase, while commercial property owners face a 1.3% hike.

City officials say this plan will help Calgarians manage today’s economic pressures, but it also continues the pattern of steadily growing government spending while asking residents to dig deeper into their pockets.

This will be the first major test for Calgary’s new Mayor and Council, which includes 10 rookie Councillors.

City Council will debate the proposed budget from November 24th through 28th, giving Calgarians an opportunity to influence how the City manages its priorities and spending.

Residents can participate by registering online to speak directly to Council during deliberations, or providing written commentary,

At Common Sense Calgary, we’ll be watching closely, breaking down the numbers, and holding City Hall accountable - but we need your support to keep the pressure on.
