📅 This Week In Calgary: 📅

  • This morning, at 9:30 am, there will be a meeting of City Council. The meeting will focus on Calgary’s 2024-2025 White Goose Flying progress report. The report outlines the City’s continued work on advancing Truth and Reconciliation commitments. The Indigenous Relations Office, established in 2020, has led efforts across departments and with community partners to implement the Calls to Action, including housing programs, procurement opportunities, and cultural initiatives. Highlights include the launch of an Indigenous housing program, a procurement strategy to support Indigenous-owned businesses, and a partnership framework for developing an Indigenous Gathering Place. Progress was also made on the Indian Residential School permanent memorial, with a conceptual design selected for implementation. City staff continue cultural learning through the Seasons of Reconciliation program, while new agreements, such as the MOU with the Blackfoot Confederacy, strengthen formal relationships. The report emphasizes integrating Indigenous perspectives into climate action, economic reconciliation, and service planning. The City will prepare for a 10-year refresh of the White Goose Flying report in 2026, with the aim of ensuring Reconciliation remains embedded in long-term plans and decision-making.

  • On Tuesday, at 9:30 am, there will be another City Council meeting. On the agenda is a new policy recommended by the Council Services Committee to manage the vacancy of a Councillor’s seat, along with related bylaw and policy amendments. The policy outlines how governance issues will be addressed during a vacancy, such as maintaining communication with residents, assigning temporary responsibilities, and filling committee or deputy mayor roles. It also clarifies how councillors’ assistants will remain employed and supervised until the vacancy is resolved. Proposed bylaw changes would allow Ward Community Event Fund applications from the affected ward to continue being reviewed and approved by a designated councillor. These measures aim to minimize disruption for residents and ensure Council’s work continues smoothly.

  • Construction has officially begun on the new Belmont Fieldhouse and Library in the city’s southwest, with an expected opening in 2027. The $71.8-million facility, located near 210 Avenue and Creekside Boulevard SW, will include a 118,000-square-foot indoor multi-sport fieldhouse and an adjacent 10,000-square-foot public library. Amenities will feature artificial turf, viewing areas, dressing rooms, washrooms, open seating, a children’s library, collections shelving, public meeting rooms, and outdoor learning space. The project is part of Calgary’s GamePLAN strategy to address gaps in recreation and library infrastructure, particularly where growing populations lack sufficient access. Council approved funding in 2021, with library funding secured in 2022. The site is intended to become a community hub, with space reserved for future recreation development and possible integration of a high school. The facility aims to improve service access, offer year-round recreational opportunities, and provide a gathering space for learning, sport, and social connection.

  • City Administration has recommended against creating a municipal site for people living in recreational vehicles, citing high costs, lengthy development timelines, and low demand. A City study found it would cost about $200,000 per vehicle in capital expenses and up to $100,000 per vehicle in operating costs, which far exceeds the cost of other subsidized housing programs. Officials said the process would involve complex permitting, land redesignation, and site servicing requirements, while offering little access to external funding. The City estimates about 20 people live year-round in RVs, and more than half indicated they would not move to a designated site. Calgary currently uses a complaint-based enforcement approach, coordinating with social services and eventually requiring violators to move. Administration also reported spending $100,000 last year on cleanup related to RV encampments.

  • The Alberta government is investing $11 million in Calgary’s first aviation and aerospace training facility, a project expected to transform the province’s aviation sector. The 126,000-square-foot complex, located near Calgary International Airport, will open in 2028 and train up to 6,000 pilots annually using eight advanced simulators alongside classroom and operations space. The project is backed by a 15-year agreement between WestJet, Mount Royal University, and Canadian Aviation Electronics (CAE), with training also extending to cabin crews across multiple aircraft types. Provincial officials say the facility will strengthen Alberta’s historic role in pilot training while meeting growing industry needs. WestJet and CAE leaders stressed that realistic, high-quality training is essential to aviation safety and operational success. The initiative is part of a wider $32-million provincial investment in aviation, which also funds the YYC AeroNex innovation hub. Mount Royal University highlighted the opportunity to equip students with in-demand skills, while Calgary Economic Development called the project a step toward making the city a global hub for aerospace innovation.
