I believe renaming Fort Calgary to “Wîchîspa” or “Confluence” is an example of presentism—applying modern values and perspectives to historical events and figures without fully considering the context in which they lived. While I support truth-telling and reconciliation, erasing names or rewriting history through a present-day lens risks losing important opportunities for learning and reflection.

We should teach our children how to understand the past in its full complexity—not just judge it by today’s standards. Real change comes when we engage with history honestly, including its flaws, and use that understanding to build a better future. Names like Fort Calgary hold layered meaning and can serve as a starting point for meaningful dialogue, rather than something to be discarded.

Let’s focus on contextualizing history, not erasing it.

Names should always be kept as part of history, no matter what the object or situation is. Everything deserves to have its name remembered.
