Declare A Tax Emergency
As many of you have likely heard since we broke the story after the election, Calgary Council will be declaring an emergency today - a Climate Emergency.
But we think, rather than declaring an emergency on an issue that isn't within Council's jurisdiction and isn't within Council's power to fix, maybe, instead, Council should declare an emergency on a pressing issue that affects every single Calgarian, every single day, is entirely caused by Calgary Council itself, and is entirely within Calgary Council's power to fix.
It's time for Calgary Council to declare a Tax Emergency.
Calgary's taxes have nearly doubled in the last 10 years - increasing far faster than inflation or population growth, and far faster than Calgarians can afford.
Families are struggling with the ever-increasing cost of living and taxes.
Many businesses are barely managing to stay afloat.
Many have already drowned in Calgary's ever-rising flood of taxes.
You'd think after 10 years of massive tax hikes, that would be enough for Calgary council, wouldn't you?
But you'd be wrong.
Earlier this year, back when it was still election time, Calgarians were promised a tax freeze, but now that the election is over, and a new Council is in place, the tax hikes are back.
Despite the repeated claims of former Mayor Nenshi, and new Mayor Gondek, Calgary doesn't have the lowest taxes in the country.
It doesn't even have the lowest taxes in the west - far from it.
Calgary has higher taxes per capita than Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, and Vancouver.
In fact, big-spending, big-taxing Edmonton is the only major western city with higher taxes than Calgary.
And that's BEFORE you count all the extra fees and charges we pay in Calgary.
Enough is enough.
It's time to send a crystal clear message to Council.
Council must Declare A Tax Emergency, and finally, get spending under control.
Please sign our petition to Council making it clear that enough is enough, and then share the petition with your friends, family, co-workers, and every Calgarian, so they can make their voices heard too.
